Best Campgrounds for Night Photography
As an avid photographer, I have always been drawn to the beauty of the night sky. There’s something magical about capturing the stars, the moon, and the milky way in their full glory, and for this reason, I’ve made it a point to seek out the best campgrounds for night photography across the United States. There are countless places where the stars shine the brightest, but some locations stand out as truly extraordinary for those of us who aim to capture the perfect shot. In this article, I’m going to share my personal experience and some of the top spots where you can enjoy camping and take stunning photographs of the night sky.
1. Death Valley National Park, California
If you’ve ever wanted to shoot the Milky Way in its most pristine form, Death Valley National Park is a must-visit. As one of the largest dark sky parks in the world, Death Valley offers some of the best conditions for night photography. The park is known for its clear skies and minimal light pollution, which makes it an ideal place for stargazing and astrophotography.
During my trip here, I camped at the Furnace Creek Campground, which is located in the heart of the park. The clear desert air and the absence of artificial light created the perfect setting for shooting long exposures of the starry night sky. I was able to photograph the Milky Way arching over the rugged desert landscape, creating an unforgettable image. The combination of the desolate terrain and the celestial backdrop made it one of the most memorable photography experiences of my life.
2. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
The Grand Canyon is famous for its dramatic views during the day, but did you know that it’s equally stunning at night? The Grand Canyon is recognized as a dark sky park, making it a fantastic location for night photography. With its wide-open spaces and minimal light pollution, it’s a perfect spot to capture star trails or even the elusive Northern Lights during certain seasons.
I stayed at the Mather Campground, which is located on the South Rim of the canyon. The best part about camping here is the proximity to the observation points, where I could set up my camera and wait for the perfect shot. On clear nights, I witnessed the Milky Way rise over the canyon, casting a soft glow over the rock formations. It was a surreal experience to see the stars reflected in the shadows of the canyon walls, making for some incredible images.
3. Joshua Tree National Park, California
For those of you who are into photographing unique landscapes, Joshua Tree National Park is a place you won’t want to miss. The park’s distinctive rock formations, twisted trees, and wide-open desert landscapes provide an interesting and surreal foreground for night photography.
Joshua Tree is a designated dark sky park, meaning the skies here are incredibly dark, making it one of the best locations in the country to capture the night sky. I camped at the Jumbo Rocks Campground, which is located near some of the park’s most iconic rock formations. As the sun set and the stars began to emerge, I set up my tripod and started shooting. The combination of the strange shapes of the Joshua trees and the brilliant stars overhead made for an otherworldly photograph. I even captured a few shots of the Milky Way, which looked absolutely spectacular rising over the iconic boulder formations.
4. Acadia National Park, Maine
For a more northern location with a beautiful coastal twist, Acadia National Park in Maine is a perfect choice. Known for its rocky coastline and picturesque landscapes, Acadia offers unique opportunities for both daytime and night photography.
I spent a few nights camping at the Blackwoods Campground, located just a short drive from the ocean. On clear nights, the skies were dark enough to allow me to photograph the Milky Way over the water. The contrast between the stars and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean created some breathtaking photos. If you’re interested in capturing both the stars and the ocean, Acadia is an ideal destination for night photography.
5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee/North Carolina
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is known for its foggy mornings and stunning views, but it also offers some fantastic opportunities for night photography. Although the park is known for having some light pollution in certain areas, there are still plenty of places where you can escape the glow of city lights and capture the stars.
I camped at the Elkmont Campground, which is located in a more secluded area of the park. The night sky here was surprisingly dark, allowing for clear shots of the stars. The rolling hills and mountain ridges provided a stunning foreground for my long exposure shots. One of the highlights was capturing the Milky Way rising over the misty mountains, with the glowing stars illuminating the sky. It’s a perfect spot for those who want to combine natural landscapes with star photography.
6. Olympic National Park, Washington
Olympic National Park is an incredibly diverse park, offering everything from lush rainforests to rugged coastlines. What makes this park particularly special for night photography is the combination of varied landscapes and dark skies. The park has minimal light pollution, especially in the more remote areas, making it an excellent location for astrophotography.
I camped at the Kalaloch Campground, located on the western coast of the park. The views of the Pacific Ocean at night were spectacular, with the sound of the waves crashing against the shore as I set up my camera. The stars were so bright that it felt like you could reach out and touch them. I was able to capture the Milky Way over the ocean, with the jagged cliffs in the foreground, creating a truly magical photograph.
7. Zion National Park, Utah
Zion National Park is known for its towering sandstone cliffs and stunning canyon views, but it also provides incredible opportunities for night photography. The park has become more popular for stargazing in recent years, and with good reason. Zion’s relatively low light pollution and dramatic landscapes make it a prime spot for astrophotography.
On my visit, I camped at the Watchman Campground, which offers easy access to many of the park’s key viewpoints. I spent my nights capturing the stars rising over the iconic rock formations of Zion, including the Watchman peak. The vibrant star trails captured over these majestic cliffs created some of my most striking photographs. If you’re looking for a place where you can shoot both the natural beauty of the landscape and the night sky, Zion is a great choice.
