Best Camping Spots Near Major US Cities: Perfect Outdoor Escapes

If you’re someone who loves the outdoors but doesn’t want to stray too far from the comforts of urban life, finding the best camping spots near major US cities can be a game changer. As a frequent camper myself, I’ve learned that you don’t have to venture into the wilderness for hours to experience the magic of nature. Some of the most beautiful and serene camping locations are right within driving distance from bustling cities, offering the perfect weekend getaway or even a quick day trip. In this guide, I’m going to share with you some of the top camping destinations that are easily accessible from major cities in the United States. Let’s dive in!

1. Camping Near New York City: Harriman State Park

Living in or around New York City doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the joys of camping. In fact, one of the best camping spots near the city is just about an hour’s drive away: Harriman State Park. With over 200 miles of hiking trails, serene lakes, and plenty of camping options, Harriman is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. I remember one of my first camping trips here—my friends and I arrived on a Friday afternoon, set up our tents by Lake Tiorati, and spent the next two days hiking, canoeing, and enjoying the fresh air. The park’s well-maintained campsites offer both tent camping and RV options, and the proximity to the city makes it a popular spot for weekend campers.

Harriman State Park also boasts plenty of wildlife, including white-tailed deer and wild turkeys, and its many lakes are ideal for swimming and fishing. Whether you're a seasoned camper or a newbie, Harriman provides a variety of activities that cater to all levels of outdoor adventurers.

2. Camping Near Los Angeles: Angeles National Forest

If you're based in Los Angeles and craving some time away from the concrete jungle, Angeles National Forest is your go-to destination. Just about an hour's drive from downtown LA, this forest is home to towering trees, rugged mountains, and sweeping vistas. I’ve spent several weekends here, escaping the city’s heat by camping in the cool, shaded areas of the forest.

The Angeles National Forest offers a wide range of camping options, from primitive backcountry sites to developed campgrounds with amenities like picnic tables and fire pits. One of my favorite spots in the forest is the Buckhorn Campground, located at an elevation of 4,000 feet. The cool mountain air, combined with the scenic surroundings, makes this one of the most relaxing places to camp near LA. There are also several hiking trails that lead to panoramic views of the San Gabriel Mountains and the Los Angeles basin. If you're an avid hiker, you’ll love the challenge of summiting Mount Baldy, which is the highest peak in the area.

3. Camping Near Chicago: Starved Rock State Park

For those living in Chicago, a short drive (about 1.5 hours) will bring you to one of Illinois' most popular state parks, Starved Rock State Park. Located along the Illinois River, this park is famous for its canyons, waterfalls, and scenic vistas. I recently took a trip to Starved Rock with some friends, and it turned out to be one of the best camping trips I’ve had. We spent the night in one of the park’s well-maintained campsites, and the next day, we explored the park’s many hiking trails. Some of the trails lead to overlooks with breathtaking views of the river and surrounding woodlands.

In addition to hiking and camping, Starved Rock offers great opportunities for fishing and bird watching. The park is also home to several historic sites, such as the old Starved Rock Lodge, where you can learn about the area’s history while enjoying a meal or a drink. For anyone living in Chicago, Starved Rock is the perfect place to disconnect and enjoy nature without having to travel too far.

4. Camping Near San Francisco: Marin Headlands

If you’re based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Marin Headlands is a must-visit camping destination. Located just across the Golden Gate Bridge, this spot offers spectacular views of the Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, and the Pacific Ocean. The Marin Headlands is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and there’s no shortage of hiking trails, wildlife, and beautiful coastal landscapes to explore.

I’ve had the pleasure of camping here a few times, and each trip has been unforgettable. The Kirby Cove Campground is a popular site, offering sites with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and it’s the perfect place to watch the sunset. If you’re into hiking, the Headlands offers several trails that wind through coastal cliffs and lush forests, providing amazing panoramic views. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, such as sea lions, coyotes, and various bird species.

5. Camping Near Seattle: Olympic National Park

Seattle residents have the luxury of being close to one of the most diverse and beautiful national parks in the U.S.: Olympic National Park. Just a couple of hours away by car or ferry, Olympic National Park is a paradise for nature lovers. The park features everything from rugged coastlines and alpine mountains to temperate rainforests, making it one of the most unique places to camp near Seattle.

I’ve spent several days camping in the park, hiking through the Hoh Rain Forest, and enjoying the solitude by Crescent Lake. The park’s campgrounds are well-maintained, and there are plenty of backcountry sites for those looking to get away from it all. One of my most memorable experiences was camping at the Sol Duc Hot Springs, where I soaked in the natural hot springs after a long day of hiking. Whether you're interested in wildlife watching, fishing, or just taking in the views, Olympic National Park offers something for everyone.

6. Camping Near Miami: Everglades National Park

For those in Miami looking to escape the city and explore one of the most unique ecosystems in the country, Everglades National Park is the place to be. Located just an hour’s drive from the city, the Everglades is a vast wetland that is home to a variety of wildlife, including alligators, manatees, and over 350 species of birds. I recently camped in the park at the Long Pine Key Campground, which offers a great balance of comfort and wilderness.

The Everglades are unlike any other place in the U.S., with its swampy waters, diverse wildlife, and stunning sunsets. There are plenty of opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and birdwatching. If you enjoy nature photography, the Everglades is an ideal location for capturing the beauty of Florida’s wild landscapes. The park offers both drive-in campgrounds and backcountry campsites for a more remote experience.
