Top Climbing and Camping Trips in the US

Discover the best climbing and camping trips across the US. From majestic mountains to serene wilderness, explore these top destinations for outdoor adventures.

1. Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite has always been at the top of my list when it comes to outdoor adventures. This iconic park offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the United States. The granite cliffs, giant sequoias, and clear rivers make it a climber’s and camper’s paradise.

During my first climbing trip to Yosemite, I was stunned by the sheer scale of El Capitan, one of the world's most famous rock formations. Yosemite is a top destination for both beginner and experienced climbers, with routes ranging from easy to extremely challenging. But what truly makes this place special is the opportunity to camp in the heart of nature.

Camping in Yosemite

Yosemite offers several campgrounds, but my favorite is the North Pines Campground, which is located right by the Merced River. The setting is perfect for relaxing after a long day of climbing. It’s also a great base for accessing some of Yosemite’s famous climbing spots.

The camping experience in Yosemite is an unforgettable one. The smell of the pine trees, the clear night sky filled with stars, and the sound of the river make it a magical spot for anyone looking to escape into nature.

2. Zion National Park, Utah

Zion National Park is another place I’ve had the pleasure of exploring. The towering red sandstone cliffs and unique desert landscapes make this park a must-see for climbers and campers alike. I’ll never forget the first time I saw the Angel’s Landing trail, a challenging hike with dramatic views.

Climbing and Camping in Zion

Zion’s climbing scene is not as well-known as Yosemite’s, but it’s just as rewarding. The park offers sport climbing, trad climbing, and even bouldering in some areas. I’ve climbed the famous Zion’s Tower, a classic multi-pitch climb that offers amazing views of the park below.

When it comes to camping, I highly recommend the Watchman Campground, located just outside the park’s entrance. It’s close to the shuttle stop, which makes it easy to access the park’s main attractions, and the views of the cliffs are spectacular.

3. Joshua Tree National Park, California

Joshua Tree National Park is another one of my favorite spots for both climbing and camping. This park is world-famous for its unique desert landscape, characterized by twisted Joshua trees and massive boulders. It’s a climber’s dream, offering everything from bouldering to traditional and sport climbing.

Climbing at Joshua Tree

I spent a few days here on my last trip, and I was amazed by the variety of routes available. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for an adrenaline rush, Joshua Tree has it all. The park is known for its famous routes like "The Eye" and "The Crack," which I had the chance to climb.

Camping in Joshua Tree is equally as rewarding. I recommend staying at the Jumbo Rocks Campground. It’s situated right among the boulders, offering a truly immersive experience. As the sun sets and the rocks glow, you’ll feel like you’re on another planet.

4. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

For those looking to experience high-altitude climbs, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado should be at the top of your list. The park offers a wide range of climbs, from easier routes for beginners to technical climbs for the most advanced climbers. I particularly enjoyed climbing Longs Peak, one of the park’s most famous peaks, which offers incredible views of the surrounding mountain ranges.

Camping in the Rockies

The campgrounds here are as diverse as the climbing routes. Whether you’re camping at the Glacier Basin Campground or the Moraine Park Campground, you’re guaranteed stunning views of the mountains. I camped at the Moraine Park Campground, and waking up to the sight of elk grazing in the morning mist was an experience I’ll never forget.

5. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

If you're looking for an adventurous climbing and camping experience, Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming is an absolute must. I remember standing at the base of the Teton Range and feeling awe-struck by its towering peaks. This park offers some of the most challenging climbs in the country, but also some of the most rewarding.

Climbing in the Grand Tetons

The Grand Teton itself is a classic climb, and it requires both technical skill and endurance. I attempted a multi-day ascent of the Grand Teton and found it to be both physically demanding and spiritually fulfilling. The views from the summit are among the best I’ve ever seen, and the sense of accomplishment is unmatched.

For camping, I recommend the Jenny Lake Campground, which offers a prime location for accessing climbing routes in the park. The campground is situated near the lake, so you can relax and cool off after a long climb. The Tetons are truly an outdoor enthusiast’s dream.

6. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Mount Rainier in Washington is one of the most iconic mountains in the US, and it’s a destination I was eager to visit. The mountain towers over the landscape and is a favorite among experienced climbers. I went there for a few days of glacier climbing, and it was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life.

Climbing and Camping at Mount Rainier

Mount Rainier offers a variety of climbing routes, from beginner-friendly glacier climbs to technical summits that require specialized gear. The climb to the summit is challenging, and it requires preparation, but the sense of accomplishment when you finally reach the top is worth every step.

The park also offers fantastic camping options. I stayed at the Cougar Rock Campground, which is located close to the entrance of the park. It was a great place to set up camp before heading out for a climb, and the views of Mount Rainier were stunning.

Whether you're an experienced climber looking for a challenge or a beginner eager to try something new, the US offers a wide range of climbing and camping trips for every level. These are just a few of my top destinations, but there are countless other spots across the country waiting for you to explore.
