I visited on a Sunday evening in September and it was practically empty! I got a magnet at the gift shop and drove to the top of Lava Butte. No shuttle, the gate was open for cars. Driving was much easier than hiking!

Busy on a summer weekend! Fun hiking through the whispering forest and lava beds. Beautiful views! Interesting info and a great gift shop at the visitor center.
Amazing experience! We only stopped at The Obsidian Flow. Unreal! Definitely add this to your itinerary. $5 day pass. 15 miles from the highway to the flow. Planning to return for the other stops.
Great place with lots of outdoor activities! Camping, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, and visiting geologic sites. Wonderful area, well worth a visit.
